	Basically, they ran out of auxiliary numbers for I-80 (180 through 980) and kept the original California route number for convenience. It definitely breaks the rules, since there has never been an I-38 anywhere... Eventually I'm going to update these Interstate quizzes with interesting facts like this.

	Why couldn't I-180 or I-480 have been used instead of I-238? Is there not an unwritten rule that there cannot be a highway # in California which exists both as a state highway and an interstate highway? Note there is no CA Hwy 5, CA Hwy 10, CA Hwy 40 or CA Hwy 15. But there is a CA Hwy 238.

	I-480 is a defunct highway that was in San Francisco. There is a CA-180 in Fresno about 160 mi away from where I-238 is, I guess they decided that was too close.

	There actually is a CA 15. It extends south from where I-15 ends in San Diego. But not for long, as there's an interchange that is due for an upgrade that will bring the entire freeway up to Interstate standards.
