I know you can't spell Platinum without Latin, but wow, that's making a lot of these impossible for people who don't know Latin music. The #6 act on your list, for example, is Vicente Fernandez, whom I have never heard of in my life.
A check of the RIAA page indicates that while the regular Platinum awards are given for sales of 1,000,000, the Latin Platinum awards are for sales of 100,000 - one tenth the level. I support affirmative action, but that kind of discrepancy is insane!
Oh, and a note on several of the missing acts: The RIAA doesn't track sales and award Gold or Platinum albums automatically. The record companies must send in an application. Some labels, like Motown, are very slow or reluctant to do that. Also, the Platinum award wasn't given out until 1976, so a lot of acts that had huge singles sales before that (such as The Supremes, The Miracles, Stevie Wonder) have never got the number of Platinum awards they deserve. |
