| This whole debate over when Y is a vowel seems silly to me given that a lot of these answers end with a silent E - no vowel sound at all, just a convention of orthography! These categories are basically arbitrary: is the H in "Savannah" a consonant, or the W in "view"? (Or the W in "cwm"?) Does "west" start with a consonant, while the identically pronounced French word "ouest" starts with a vowel? We act like there are clear, self-evident distinctions when in fact the boundaries are either fuzzy or laid down capriciously. |
