	Surprising that Louisiana, with the largest city in the South during the Civil War, took that long to pass a million as a state.

	@conradmcmasters: in fact, it isn't a link but a source. If you want to check it, go to www.census.gov, in "People & Households" click on "Census 2000", then at the bottom of the center column click on "Selected Historical Census Data - 1790 to 1990" and then scroll down until item 15 (Population). There you will find the population data for each state and census. (Of course, some "little arithmetic" was needed to calculate the year in which the population reached 1 million).

	@chriskotx: the census figures for Louisiana are 939,946 for June 1st, 1880 and 1,118,588 for June 1st, 1890 (censuses were taken in June at that times). The interpolation gives late Dec, 1883 as the theoretical moment in which the population surpassed 1 million. Of course it's impossible to know the actual date, but it was undoubtedly in the mid-1880s.

	It's odd that West Virginia is part of the Southern Region since the Detroit office is the one that serves Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia.

	@DJ_Donkeypunch: WV is included in the South Atlantic division, part of the South Census region. (Each region comprises 2 or 3 divisions). I think that to give only the region as a help offers an adequate level of difficulty. To give also the division would make the quiz too easy, e.g. the Pacific division includes only CA, OR, WA and HI (also AK, which doesn't matter for this game). The West region (that includes the Pacific and the Mountain divisions) has 10 states to be guessed, so the quiz isn't excessively easy.

	@upintheclub69: Initially I had thought of not including the census region, but to guess that the only state that reached 1,000,000 population in 1876 (without more data) was Mississippi would be rather hard, even by Sporcle standards. The "South" clue helps, but not too much: Alabama, Texas, South Carolina, Louisiana or Arkansas could be also reasonable answers. In my opinion the game isn't so much easy.

	I liked this quiz a lot. My only critique is that you should take off a minute if not two from the timer.

	Yeah. There is too much time. I had to make multiple guesses on quite a few of the states, and I still finished with over 5 minutes left.

	@otis 89: Agreed, with 34% of people getting perfect scores (which I think is above the average for Sporcle games), the time is now 8 minutes. Maybe times will come in the future when also this fact is taken into account in the table of results (you completed the game in less than 5 minutes, but you're mixed in the successful 34% with those who needed 9 min 59 sec).

	@marpocky: if one extrapolates the growth between the 2000 census (902,195) and the latest Census Bureau estimate (974,989 for July 1st, 2009), the arrival of the millionth Montanan is scheduled for the first days of July, 2012. But it's better to wait for the preliminary results of the 2010 census to make a more accurate guess. To make predictions is difficult, especially about the future.

	@TheBigE1980: good remark. I hadn't noticed it, as the census reports simply list population figures without making distinctions between territories and states. But it's curious that Oklahoma was well over 1 million people and it was still a territory (it was admitted as state in 1907). On the other hand, Nevada became a state in 1864 (!) with a scant population (even in 1870 it was under 50,000 people). Was it all perhaps only a matter of political lobbying?

	Montana will be on here soon, but will any other states be on here in the near future? Delaware might be here in ten years and South Dakota at its current pace in about 25, but none of the four others (AK, ND, VT, WY) seem to have a good enough clip to make this list anytime soon.

	I think PA, MD, VA, NJ, NY & WV should be lumped into Mid-Atlantic, not Northeast & South. No one from any of those states considers themselves to be in the Northeast or the South. Even the US census proceeds to break the states down as such (your source).
