Not that strange - it was my first guess after the obvious ones. There have been ties between the two countries for a couple of hundred years since many Irish helped fight for Argentina's independence (likewise in Chile). Also Buenos Aires has the world's biggest St. Patricks Day celebration for a non-English-speaking country.

I think part of Argentina's appeal was it being a majority-Catholic country, unlike every other point of emigration on the list where Irish Catholics faced widespread religious discrimination, historically.

i only got Argentina when I remembered about Bernardo O'Higgins. There are loads of ethnic people from the UK too. I remember there was a player in the Argentina football team called McAllister once.

Turgidstan, Catholicism is the largest religion in Canada. Particularly in places like Newfoundland where lots of Irish settled.

@geowiz...I suppose those who didn't guess Ireland either didn't think of the obvious or thought it was a quiz about where Irish people moved to.

In addition to their Irish population, Argentina also has a huge Welsh population. Patagonia is full of Welsh villages, particularly in the Chubut Valley. Maybe they should get some Scots and Bretons down there, too, to complete the set.
