Well done on the quiz. Must be hard to retire as Carlton Fisk when you're one game away from one of the biggest milestones ever: Games played at 2500.
Feb 12th, 2011 at 05:34 GMT
Good quiz. Missing an asterisk for the #3 OBP catcher, just fyi.
Feb 12th, 2011 at 12:37 GMT
Wow, that was hard. Well done...
Feb 12th, 2011 at 12:51 GMT
It would be cool if you included catcher era (the era of pitchers when that player is catching)
Feb 12th, 2011 at 13:21 GMT
I really enjoyed this quiz! I'm surprised so many people forget how good Simmons was.
Feb 12th, 2011 at 16:29 GMT
@Nada, 2500 games is "one of the biggest milestones ever"??
Feb 12th, 2011 at 16:33 GMT
Fantastic quiz! Note how good, and underrated, Ted Simmons of the Cardinals was.
Feb 12th, 2011 at 17:55 GMT
Cool quiz, kind of surprised none of the Molina's are on here
Feb 13th, 2011 at 00:25 GMT
Good quiz. For the record...Looking at the HBP column, you have an asterisk next to one of the players at 107 HBP. That player is no longer active - he was injured during the 2010 season and announced his retirement.

Nice quiz. But is there any reason you don't just add the bonus answers into the quiz and make them groups of 10?
Feb 13th, 2011 at 01:17 GMT
Thanks to sweett310 and ojoe for the corrections. sbshuffler85: I would have included years, but couldn't add another column, so I'd have to add it to the numbers column, and I thought that would mess up the format of the quiz.
Feb 13th, 2011 at 01:22 GMT
pancakes188: I was debating between top 5 and top 10, and settled for 8 because the ninth and tenth best in some categories were tough.
Feb 13th, 2011 at 02:10 GMT
Good quiz, but there really needs to be some minimum number of at bats for the rate stats (ave, slug, and oba). Mike Napoli has a total of 1500 at bats and you are comparing him to players with many more at bats. Baseball-Reference (your source) doesn't consider players for rate stat leader boards until they have reached 3000 at bats. I would say that is fair and generous minimum.
Feb 13th, 2011 at 03:20 GMT
You're right - some of the catchers didn't meet the 3000 PA minimum. I've deleted them. Thanks.

ClancyMaskem: Good point. Unfortunately for him, he played in the 70s in cavernous Busch stadium when the Cardinals weren't very good. There is no way that Gary Carter was better than Simmons, but Carter is in the HOF.

Because nobody likes Jason kendall

Usually when people put bonus answers after each category like this quiz has, it totally screws up the results page, but in this quiz that doesn't seem to be the case. Does anyone know why?
Feb 14th, 2011 at 16:16 GMT
The hardest position in all of sports!
Feb 14th, 2011 at 20:05 GMT
it's sad, people getting worked up over Jack Morris when they should take a look at Ted Simmons. A crime, really.
Feb 14th, 2011 at 21:41 GMT
If you got Red Dooin or Wally Schang, I bow to your baseball knowledge.
Feb 14th, 2011 at 22:48 GMT
Shocked to see Tim McCarver not listed under games played. IIRC, he played in four decades (50s thru 80s).
Feb 14th, 2011 at 23:09 GMT
indyjeff: I believe that as long as the quiz-maker puts all extra answers at the bottom, the results page works fine. It gets screwed up when bonus answers are contained in the middle of the list. (I know this because I screwed it up myself once. I don't know if I stated that clearly, though - did it make sense?)
Feb 14th, 2011 at 23:16 GMT
barnztormre: yup, 21 seasons from 1959-1980...but only 1909 games. He only really played full seasons from 1963-1973, and then averaged about 70 games a year after that. He's 17th all time.
Feb 15th, 2011 at 07:31 GMT
wally schang happens to be my favorite catcher of all time...i'm weird like that. best offensive catcher before catchers started playing every day.
Feb 15th, 2011 at 22:00 GMT
Josh Gibson should be a bonus answer for "general offensive domination". Too bad he never got to play in the major leagues.
Feb 16th, 2011 at 03:47 GMT
@Nada: Fisk did not retire, he was released just after setting the career games caught record, which he held by 1 game. He wasn't even voted a playoff share by the 1993 ChiSox. These data do not necessarily agree with the official MLB-recognized totals.

Great quiz. It would be nice to also have fielding percentage included in these leaders by positions quizzes.
Mar 6th, 2011 at 15:55 GMT
Good quiz, I second the quote above, you should add some defensive categories too, like fielding percentage and caught stealing %

Great quiz. Enjoyed it thoroughly!!!

Sep 5th, 2012 at 00:29 GMT
Buck Ewing stole 354 (recorded) bases. I'm guessing he played too long ago? Also, maybe you should update this quiz (which is great by the way) after the 2012 season
