| @johnlk You're wrong. Kansas City, Mo., was in fact founded before the state or territory of Kansas was established. You said "almost", but almost doesn't count. Kansas City, Kan., was not founded until decades later when Kansas City, Mo., grew across the state line. Also, the cities and state were not named for the Kansas River. They were named for the Kanza Indian tribe. The Kansas River was actually referred to as the Kaw River at the time the Kansas territory was founded. Some people still refer to the University of Kansas as "Harvard on the Kaw". As a Mizzou grad, I mock those people. In summary, Kansas City was not named after Kansas. Kansas City, Mo., was named after the Kanza indians and Kansas City, Kan., was named after the city that preceded it across the state line. |
