	@NCBerge: The L'Osservatore Romano is owned by the Church. It is a Vatican City newspaper. With your logic, if the paper was the Washington Post in a similar US State quiz, Maryland and Virginia should be acceptable answers. After all, there are likely more Maryland and Virginia readers of the Washington Post than Washington, D.C. readers. Sorry, but I don't agree with you.

	@NCBerge: Perhaps you're not aware but two of the Pope's official titles are "Bishop of Rome" and "Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Roman Province". However, these titles don't permit the Pope to cast a ballot in Italian elections, not even those just in the city of Rome. Also, the paper's official website carries a Vatican registry (www.osservatoreromano.va), not an Italian one (which would be .it).

	Sorry, NCBerge, but no matter what the paper is called, it is still a Vatican paper. It doesn't matter at all that Italians happen to read it too. The New York Times is read all over the world. If we accept Italy for the Vatican paper, we have to accept pretty much every country for the NYT since the headline "appears" in those other countries too. Judging by the votes on your earlier comments, you're alone in your interpretation. Sorry.

	@mbossa: The Times is sold throughout the UK. Its headquarters are in London but that doesn't make it a specifically English newspaper. After all, the HQ of any British company has to be situated in one of the four constituent countries. The state of New York isn't accepted for the American newspaper and England shouldn't be accepted for the British one.

	I found the 'The World' one a bit tricky because had I not known about 'Le Monde'...ok, to avoid a long speil I'll just say it was a bit vague. Fun quiz.

	@davidr: The state of New York isn't accepted for the American newspaper and England shouldn't be accepted for the British one. I'm not too fussed about whether England should be accepted, but the quiz does ask for countries, and England is generally considered a country (it's a constituent part of the UK and not itself an independent nation, but it's still a country). New York is never referred to as a country. The newspaper may be sold in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, but they shouldn't be accepted for exactly the same reason that Italy shouldn't be accepted for the Vatican City paper.

	@mbossa: The words `country', `nation' and `state' can all be used to mean exactly the same thing. England is only a country in the sense that it's called a country — it doesn't even have its own government (there is no English parliament). If the American Constitution had chosen the word `country' instead of `state', we'd be having the exact same argument about the Country of New York. Indeed, you'll notice that the term `state' is often used to refer to sovereign countries, such as in the phrases `head of state', `state function', `state visit'. Nobody ever argues that this usage makes New York state equivalent to a country, so why do people make the argument for England? It's just a coincidence of terminology that we're using the word `country' rather than `state' to mean `sovereign country/state/nation'.

	Why does Sporcle never take Eire for the Republic of Ireland? "Ireland" is a geographical concept and to conflate it with the republic is to make a controversial polical statment that we are all taught to avoid.

	@oldman: for the same reason that Deutschland wouldn't be accepted for Germany. The site is in English and, as with all geographical quizzes on this site, answers are given as what they are commonly referred to in English.

	@Oldman: Both the country and the island are called just `Ireland' in English; Eire is the Irish-language name for the country. Calling the country `Ireland' doesn't imply any territorial claim to the whole island, just as referring to `the United States of America' doesn't imply a territorial claim to the whole of the Americas.
