@tonybraintree: You're mistaken. The city isn't "Green".

How about Washington? It's a district, not a city.

No, the city is Tampa, not Tampa Bay. And Washington is a city, it is the only city in the District of Columbia.

I have no idea where it comes from, but just because I've seen this misconception before: http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/55/5531000.html Any Green Bay deniers, look at this OFFICIAL US GOVERNMENT WEB PAGE, and then tell me if you still think that.

This is hyper-pedantic (which is what happens if you edit too many NY pp on Wikipedia) but does New York always refer to the city (or metropolitan area) or does it signify New York state for some teams, as Texas Rangers refers to Texas? Or are some owners canny enough to leave that happy ambiguity unresolved? (They want fans from Albany as well as Queens).

Also hyper-pedantic, but the proper name of the city is "Washington, DC" and not just Washington, so one could at least argue that the Washington teams' names don't contain a city.
