| Re Oman: the great circle route may go over just a tip of Northern Oman, but the map can't be enlarged so it's more difficult to tell than on the "Distance Calculator" site Edelweiss used. Also, in spite of the sometimes radical differences in routes (especially Vancouver), and in spite of my game title, both sites cite the same distance between points. The largest discrepancy is 30 miles (for Tokyo, which probably results from different starting points in the city itself). So the distance calculator probably calculates a gc distance, then draws a straight line on a rectangular projection map. I'm no expert, just used this as a learning tool, so sporcle geography experts: have at it! |
