| There are a handful of differences between the two calculations. They each use different defensive components (UZR for fWAR (FanGraphs) and Total Zone for (rWAR). They also use different positional adjustments, Tom Tango for fWAR and Sean Smith for rWAR. fWAR also uses the same replacement for both leagues, while rWAR uses different replacement levels for each league for non-pitchers. There are also different base running components for each. I feel they're best used in conjunction with each other, as opposed to only looking at one. I think they're both helpful, I just chose fWAR because of my preference for the way it values pitchers (even though I'm a Tigers fan and rWAR likes Verlander much more, because it actually deals with runs allowed as opposed to FIP.) Sorry for the long post, hope it's somewhat helpful. |
