| At the end of the Revolutionary War the British and Americans decided on territorial boundaries and the northern border was supposed to run from the "northwest corner" of Lake of the Woods to the Mississippi River. They didn't realize that the river didn't go that far north, but the northwest boundary stuck, and later when the 49th parallel was decided on for the rest of the continent, they kept the old point intact and drew the border from the lake directly south to the 49th. I've always wondered whether on Election Day the ballots from these exclaves have to travel through Canadian territory...American votes going through a foreign nation. |
