Very surprised that Japan is not it the second list. Why are most of them Eastern European countries?

@osasunaitor: I was thinking the opposite: Why aren't they all Eastern European countries? How come three of the four countries that border Israel are shrinking? The civil war in Syria hasn't killed that many people.

Oh, and to answer your question, Eastern European countries are not having enough children to keep the population growing. And also, for obvious reasons, there is very little immigration to those countries.

@SomethingRandom: Depends on what you call 'high' (so far, around 30 thousand dead), but there's also a million and a half refugees and displaced citizens, according to Al Jazeera. /That/'s definitely done something to the population.

@cherrysalmon: I meant that the civil war in Syria hasn't killed enough people to make that much of a dent in the country's population. Oh, and by the way, my name is SomeONERandom.

I do have to agree with osasunaitor. Japan is currently on track to becoming essentially extinct within 150 years if the population trends keep the way they are. Also, you would think that some more Western European countries (Ireland comes to mind) would be on the list.

According to the source Japan is 199th out of 230 (it includes some non-sovereign territories) with an annual population change of -0.08%.

I personally agree with someonerandom. In my opinion, his name IS someonerandom. Not somethingrandom. But lets not turn this into a debate :)

I heard that Zimbabwe lost a quarter of its population as illegal immigrants in South Africa, but maybe I'm wrong.
