| Thanks for the comments, debaser. (Is that a Pixies reference there? I personally approve if so!)
All of the ladies that you mention were on the shortlist that my partner and I drew up, with the exception of Miss Dressler.(Given the amount of cinematic junk we've seen between us, it's incredible that neither of us have managed to witness Dressler in action as of yet!) Forgive us on that one.
I dunno what happened with Grace Kelly, I think she must've accidentally been omitted at some stage in the process. I'm not a major fan (admittedly, she was gorgeous) but I agree that she deserves a place on the list, if only for the Hitchcock collaborations.
Cardinale was inches away from getting #100, but we decided to pay homage to an early star. And we figured that there were several European actresses in the 1960s who were equally as gorgeous whilst doubly as prodigious in front of the camera.
Again, neither of us particularly admire Shearer or Foster. We were tempted to include Shearer on the basis of her popularity and her delightful pre-Code films, but we couldn't help but feel that several of her peers' performances in those risqué films have aged better. (Stanwyck, Harlow and Chatterton to name three.) As for popularity, we didn't want to go down a slippery slope that gave precedence to $ over all else. Hence the reluctance to include Foster, whose work we generally find quite sterile. (On a personal note, I love her early performances from the late 70s... "Taxi Driver" especially, of course).
Anyway, thanks again! |
