@amareandcarmelo: Good question. It's complicated because the school was founded referring to the name of the town Kent, then it was renamed specifically to honor a son of the town's namesake. So the town of Kent existed long before the school was named for another Kent.

Um, if Clemson was named before the town, why is it a bonus instead of a real answer? Especially since it's named after the founder.

It's hard to say Clemson isn't named after the town it is in, even if the town isn't the original namesake. Purdue isn't in Purdue, IN, and the inclusion of Clemson, which is in Clemson, SC, is a bit misleading.

@MrBRW: Clemson IS a real answer, it just has a bonus informational note added with it. @Coyote68x: the point is that Clemson U. existed long before Clemson, SC so the U. wasnt named for the town but vice versa. @utjosh1: Thanks for the typo catch. @MSUKent: Thanks for the Pick!

I'm pretty sure the University of Notre Dame existed before Notre Dame, Ind., did.

Not so sure about the service academies since all three have "United States" in their names.

Have to argue with Miami (OH) because it was named for the Miami Tribe. The school is in Oxford, OH.

Rutgers seems like sort of a borderline case. The full name of the University is "Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey".

Miami is named after the Miami tribe, not the valley which also shares the name of the tribe.

I really like the idea for this quiz, but I think the gray area is too large.

Technically speaking, Southern Methodist is not named for a geographic location, but a direction. Just try finding a "southern" on a map. Perhaps I'm being too pedantic. Also, Army, Navy and Air Force are all named for geographic locations, as they all have "United States" in their names. United States Naval Academy, etc ...

DCee, Miami was not named for the Miami tribe, it was named for the Miami Valley/Miami River, which were themselves named for the tribe. But if you use that logic, almost any place name could be traced back to an origin not related to that specific location. That would be like saying the University of Cincinnati is named for Cincinnatus and not the city itself.
