"New York" is the correct name of the city. People only add the word "City" at the end informally, to distinguish it from New York State.

I've been to Lake Station/Gary multiple times, and I found out while making this quiz that they changed their name to dissociate themselves from Gary. Which I find hilarious. So I guess I added it in there for my own amusement. I'm sorry if it caused any confusion!
