@vikings380: This is directly out of the Webster's 3rd New Inter. Dictionary, under the entry "i":
"1a: the ninth letter of the English alphabet... 2: one"
In a dictionary, all senses listed under the same main entry are considered to be the same word.
You won't find 2 in the dictionary, but for all intents and purposes it is the same as "two". Because "two" is not the same thing as "II", they are not considered the same word.
As for the a/an/and/the problem, it all has to do with the way Sporcle is programmed. You may have noticed that, when an answer includes one of those words, it isn't necessary to type it. The Sporcle quiz engine automatically ignores those four words. A rather unfortunate side effect of this is that, when it recognizes a/an/and/the as an answer, it considers them all the same. That's why any one of them will trigger all three correct responses on this quiz.
I imagine that, because this does not occur on the "Commonest English Words" quiz, the Sporcle Admins must have some way of fixing the problem on a published quiz. For now, I can do nothing. |
