| You need to accept Washington and/or District of Columbia. Washington was a city in the District of Columbia (DC) along with Georgetown, but the Organic Act of 1871 (full text here: http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/ampage?) effectively dissolved the municipal governments of the cities as well as anything else in the district creating one municipal government called the "District of Columbia" so there is no mayor of Washington or Washington city council, only a DC mayor and Council of the District of Columbia (http://dc.gov/DC/ and http://www.dccouncil.washington.dc.us/). So Washington, Washington DC, and the District of Columbia should all be accepted. In fact Washington, DC is probably the least correct of the three since it is like saying Los Angeles, California while Washington was formally the official capital city and the District of Columbia is currently the official name used in government documents. |
