	If you count Republic of Ireland as an "R" country, you've got to count South Korea as a "K" country (Korea Republic). Other than that, I think my only quibble would be the "V" answer. Venezuela has been 8th in the South American qualifying group since South America has moved to one group. So Venezuela has never progressed past the round they've started in. Although it's clearly an inferior side, Vanuatu HAS progressed through OFC qualifying. It's tricky to determine which side is "closer" to winning the WC (Venezuela 3 spots away from a playoff, Vanuatu 2 spots away from playing in the playoff to enter a playoff)... but I'd say just count both.

	Sweet quiz - especially as a good few answers are nations that don't exist any more. Can you change the title to 'most successful World Cup nation for each letter' or something though? Just seems a bit funny to have countries going 'closest to winning' it when they actually have, er, won.

	Have changed Germany's best position now. I did think about Vanuatu and may still add them, I just feel that Venezuela this year were two wins away from the World Cup, which is closer than the group before the play off before the play off which is at least 3 wins away. With R and K... well I just wanted Ireland to win something and in football I believe the Republic part is important as it distinguishes the team from Northern Ireland which is not a factor in most of these quizzes usually. Anyhow, feel free to agree/disagree and you may well change my mind. I'm just happy people are playing and commenting.

	I agree with the quizmaker here. You have to have the name of the countries as they are used in the world of football. Therefor Republic of Ireland is correct to distinguish itself from Northern Ireland. Can't use standard Sporcle "regulations" as Sporcle doesn't recognize England, Wales, Scotland, Faroe Islands etc. as countries.

	@HPfan221 No, West Germany have won it three times. Germany's first World Cup was in 1994, when they got the quarter finals and were beaten by Bulgaria (!). They came second to Brazil in 2002, and reached the semi-finals last year.
