| I agree with all comments made so far. I'd also like to add that, for some countries, the use of "the" is elusive. When people write or speak of the country I live in, they say THE United States of America or simply THE United States or even THE U.S.A. or THE U.S. ... but always with "the". Why then do we omit "the" for the U.S., but not for The Gambia? And why does "the" get capitalized for The Gambia, but not for the United States or the Philippines or the Netherlands or the United Kingdom or the Seychelles? If the "the" in The Gambia gets capitalized, does that mean it should be alphabetized under "T" instead of "G"? Some official sporcle quizzes choose the former, others the latter. Oh, by the way, nice quiz, chasmmi -- apart from the corrections people already mentioned. ;-) |
