| Just to address some of the above: Hahn/Huhn/Hühnchen: Der Hahn is a rooster, Das Huhn is a chicken in general or a female one, Das Hühnchen is a dish made from roast chicken, chicken the meat would be "Hühnerfleisch". Hase/Kaninchen: First, it's "Der Hase" and "Das Kaninchen", so both indefinite articles should be "ein", apart from that, different animals (hare and rabbit respectively, one lives in holes, the other one doesn't). "Hasen", to confuse you even more, can be either plural of Hase or describe the family of leporidae, "Hasenartige" (hare-likes) is lagomorpha. So Hase for rabbit is kinda squeezy, can be justified but is strange. "Geiß" for "Ziege" is just regional dialect, should IMO not be accepted because then you'll get requests for "Foss" (fox) or "Leuw" (lion). "Lämmchen" should definitely not be accepted for "Lamm", since it is only a diminutive, "little lamb", not the name of the animal. Turtle/tortoise: as A_Trep said, both are "Schildkröte", which is the general term. You can use "Landschildkröte" and "Meeresschildkröte" to differentiate, but it's rarely done (and when, as A_Trep said, mostly only to tortoises/Landschildkröten). Oh, and the German word for "seal" is "Seehund" (sea dog). |
