| It's Pittsburg, not Pittsburgh. At the turn of the 20th century, the U.S. Board of Geographic Names (or its predecessor), no doubt partly under the influence of the the then-popular spelling reform movement, took the H off town names (e.g. Edinburg, Texas), but Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, successfully resisted. Pittsburg (then a company town of U.S. Steel) was indeed named after Pittsburgh, Pa. |
