I'm not saying your quiz is bad, in fact its bad not at all. And I do like how you said some countries have been excluded. But I'm just wondering why they chose some countries that aren't "small island states" such as Serbia, which I would say has a higher standard of living than almost half of this list.

I know, I thought it was a bit of a strange list, but I take no responsibility for Newsweek's evaluation criteria! It's based on five factors - education, health, economic dynamism, politics and quality of life, but I'm not sure exactly how each aspect is measured and weighted. Some countries have definitely been left off (e.g. on HDI lists Barbados comes in the top 30) but I couldn't find a definitive statement of their policy on which countries are excluded. I'm not sure if there's a population cut off or something. Not that this would explain the absence of Serbia - perhaps it lost points on politics and quality of life? BoomRShine, I did search for a similar quiz thinking that somebody may have done it, but nothing showed up on the search lists for some reason. Ah well, I suppose this will give anyone who missed it yesterday a chance to have a go. Apologies to Tuvon.

The quiz is fine but its a stupid Newsweek ranking. Top 100 of 192 minus the 20-odd island nations?

This should probably be in order or something - 100 countries is like half of all the countries.

Bart, I think Iceland must be excluded due to its low population -as I said in the above comment, I can't find an explicit statement on the Newsweek site about exclusions, but it seems to exclude countries with a population lower than about 500,000 (Luxembourg is on there and has a population of half a million; Iceland's is a shade over 300,000). I agree that I would rather live in Serbia than Yemen!

If you were a Muslim, you'd probably rather live in Yemen than Serbia. At least 15 years ago anyway. Perspective.

If Pakistan and Burkina Faso are making this list, then just how failed must your state be to not be in the 100 Greatest countries over a certain size?
Effectively, this is just a glorified "slightly bigger Countries of the world" quiz. It's like naming the "6 greatest dwarfs".

@Sinatra22 - Countries don't suck just because they're communist. Still, Belarus I would have thought is currently Europe's worst faring country?

it's stupid to use all 100 of newsweek's top 100 - that just makes it pointless. 1) because it's not interesting because you have countries like yemen and burkina faso on the list which are basket cases and 2) because you just start typing in all of the countries that probably aren't on the excluded list.

Why is it that whenever a list of countries comes out, Finland is in the top 10? They're #1 in both suicides and happiness.

I'd definitely rather live in Cyprus, Malta, Luxembourg, Andorra, San Marino, Liechtenstein, Trinidad & Tobago, St Lucia, St Kitts & Nevis, Barbados, the Bahamas or St Vincent & the Grenadines than half the countries on this list. Size isn't everything!

Booster_Gold: Totally agree, the first characteristic that comes to mine when i think of Finland is the high suicide rate. Plus it's damn cold and right next to russia. this quiz is madness.

this is a horrible quiz. I read the article on newsweek, and they picked 100 (almost) random countries and just ranked those. Burkina faso could be almost last, but it was picked for this list. Please take this quiz off of sporcle. Also, this quiz was already made

@Booster_Gold Maybe Finland is #1 in both happiness and suicides because, and this makes too much sense to me to be right (not to mention decent), but maybe all the depressed people commit suicide, leaving a happier population. This is a terrible thought, but morbidly rational...

Only Newsweek would come up with such a random and pointless list. Have they really run out of liberal talking points to write about? Secondly, since nobody really knows any of the criteria beforehand it becomes just another pointless "name all the countries you know" quiz.
