could you accept field marshal for 1? I'm pretty sure that was the name of the piece when I used to play.

I'm sure miner used to be called sapper (i.e. it is on mine which is ancient) so that should be allowed as well.

when I played the ratings were reveresed, sort of, a scout was 2, a miner was 3 a sergeant was 4 and so on all the way to marshal at 10

there are two versions that go both directions...but you should still be able to get them all, the positions haven't really changed

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the higher values are for the higher-ranked people. For example, Scout was 1 and Marshal 9.

Thought this was going to be really easy because I played this game all the time but then as soon as I started I realized I always called the pieces by their numbers, i.e "You killed my 2"

"Colors" should also be accepted for "flag"

Wow, grew up never calling them by their names. Tried "bomb diffuser" for number 8.

The miner should also be called "grenadier" as that was used in some versions. @TheBluesMan, awesome reference!

Stratego is a great game, but boy those military ranks can be hard to spell. I tried about 6 versions of sergeant and couldn't get it right, also flubbed colonel and was lucky to get lieutenant. And I consider myself a good speller.

Until I made this game I would have bet money that "marshal" had two L's

^ Marshall Islands has two, I think otherwise one L is more common now.

It'd been ages upon ages since I've played this. I remembered bomb, flag, spy and marshal and just used army ranks for the rest. I could not remember miner and scout.

Why aren't they labeled from 10 to 2, with S and then no labels?

The rankings are backwards; the Marshall (with two 'l's) is 10 (being the highest).
