ISLAND NATIONS are NOT included in this quiz. Oceania, Caribbean, and UK are off limits. Identify the countries that have high coastline to land area ratios. To clarify: if this game were applied to US states, Florida would be a good option, because of its very long coastline (relative to its land area). Units for coastline = meters. Units for land area = km^2.....so ratios may seem a bit high

If you use http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_length_of_coastline and sort by coast/area ratio you can see Chile just missing out. Great quiz! Really enjoyed it. Thanks for not including islands, made it a lot more interesting.

Chile is not on the list because the measurement used is not scale-invariant - it is biased towards small countries (that's why Monaco's number is off the charts). A better measure would be coastline^2 / area. Also, you say "not UK" but you don't say "not Ireland"...

Chile isn't on here because the source is flawed, and the scale used apparently doesn't measure coastline very well. It has an incredibly long coastline, and it is obviously, vastly underestimated in the source.

I think you need to clarify your definition of island nation. You're excluding the UK even though it has a land border (Ireland), and is therefore not strictly an island nation. Do you also exclude Papua New Guinea for example?

Astonishing that Canada is not only on the list, but the most gotten, considering how thick an area it covers.

Malaysia is an island nation just as much as the UK. Also, Denmark and Greece have many islands which counts a lot.

This is a great idea for a quiz, but you need to change the way you calculate it. As area is a two-dimensional concept and length of coastline is one-dimensional, clearly there needs to be a squaring involved before you do the division part of the calculation. By my reckoning, Chile would be number 2 on this corrected scale, and other large countries with long coastlines would also come into the list. Make this change and you have a great quiz.

malaysia is not as much of an island nation as the UK. malaysia has land on a continent, which the UK does not. canada has such a large coastline because of all of the islands in the northwest territories and nunavut

According to the shortest coastlines quiz, Monaco has a coastline of 4km. A ratio of 2,051.3 gives Monaco an area of just under 2,000m^2, or less than half a soccer pitch. I know it's small, but not that small!
