NO LANDLOCKED COUNTRIES are included in this game. Identify the countries that have the lowest coastline to land area ratio. In other words, name large countries with short coastlines. So if this game were applied to US States, Texas would be a good option because of its massive land area and relatively short coastline.

For the coast/area ratio, the units for coastline are meters, and the units for area are km^2. Therefore, these ratios might seem a bit high.

Pretty neat idea for a quiz.

Would somewhere like The Gambia not have a smaller coastline to area ratio than Brazil etc. I know Brazil is much larger but I would guess around 40% of its boundary is on the coast. Maybe I just don't get what we're supposed to do :S

chocolatl: just went back to the wikipedia page (link above), and saw that the info on that page actually came from the CIA World Factbook.

coastline^2 / area would be a better measurement, as that's scale independent (meaning similarly shaped countries will have the same measurement regardless of size). The current measurement is weighted towards bigger countries.

I was stuck with 2 countries left to go. Got one of them, then finally started guessing really large countries on the off chance one of them was the last one-- got it with 3 seconds left on the clock. Phwew!

I also wondered why Gambia was not on this list, but when you do the math the ratio comes out to 7.08 (80,000 m/11,295 km²) if you use the figures from the CIA World Factbook. It's small area doesn't overcome it's short coastline to make this list.

Also, I was wondering where the United States would fare on this list. It's ratio is 2.028.

Should allow Rep Congo for Republic of the Congo, as it's standard on many Sporcle quizzes.
