	the human development index is a much better approximation of what countries are developed than whatever was used to make this list-i mean south africa?

	South Africa does seem to be less developed, but this is the list of countries that meet the CIA definition.

	Well, it's obviously an American list. Who else would have "developed countries" and "former USSR/Eastern Europe" as two mutually exclusive categories?

	Yeah, it looks like the CIA just added South Africa in since the country failed to meet any of the other classifications (namely GDP per capita) necessary for inclusion. To call South Africa a developed country is to ignore the 99 percent of it that is not.

	South Africa is not a developed country at all. Considering you almost need a personal security guard if you want to walk around Johannesburg freely, I think that speaks for itself.

	Having been to Singapore...I disagree with its exclusion. The press isn't overly free and they could use a little bit more in the way of democratic reform. But it's technologically superior to much on this list, extremely safe, and as modern as any city on the planet.
