This list, and the spirited discussion above, illustrates why no academy should hand out Best Of The Year awards until at least 10 years have passed. Let the hype, the sentimentality, and the trendy hipness wear off, then look back clear-eyed and see what has stood the test of time and what hasn't.
Maybe it's not too late. I'd sure like to see, say, 1952 re-voted on -- High Noon vs. Singin' In The Rain, now THAT would be one hell of a contest! (Plus, Jean Hagen can finally get the Best Supporting Actress award she deserves, IMO the snub to end all snubs.) Or 1995 -- not that Braveheart was bad in any way, but it might not even earn a *nomination* today with the likes of Dead Man Walking, Se7en, The Usual Suspects, Toy Story and Apollo 13 in the mix. (And don't get me started on the Grammies...sheesh...) |
