First time I ever heard that song was live when it was covered by Paul McCartney & Wings on the Wings Over America tour in 1976. That last line of verse hit me like a punch in the gut.

@rockgolf: Have you ever read the poem its based on? It's about this guy who has everything, except family and friends. I love the song, but the poem is from a worker's point of view who uses "we" through it. I always wondered why S&G didn't use we instead of I.

I got all except "one-half". To me, that's two words: I tried one, I tried half, neither worked and I thought I must have been mishearing it all these years.

Good choice on the song. This is a great one that I haven't listened to in a while. I think I am going to listen to it while I take the next in your series. Thanks for putting these together!

@RainbowTiger: You're welcome: If you get a chance, look up the poem by the same name by e.e. cummings.

I didn't know about the ee cummings poem! Thanks for that!

Just googled it - it's not cummings, it's Edward Arlington Robinson. http://famouspoetsandpoems.com/poets/edwin_arlington_robinson/poems/18449 Although I did find some essay connecting Robinson's poem with one by cummings ("anyone lived in a pretty how town"), a connection I don't see - but I didn't read the essay.
