Alternate spellings for "Rebekah" would be nice.

Yeah, I quit after "Rebecca" wouldn't count, given it's the right answer.

Nice quiz ... despite the fact that it drives home how utterly patriarchal the bible is. One thing you could do to improve the look of the quiz is to make the Hint column wider a the expense of the other columns. After all, how wide do the Number and Name columns have to be? Oh, and jtolszewski, given that the bible was not written with the Roman alphabet, the transliteration of the name Rebecca is quite arbitrary. That some versions spell it Rebekah does not mean that's the only acceptable form.

This isn't nearly all of the women in the Bible. You could do well by including Deborah, Batsheba, Zipporah, Bilhah, Zilpah, Eve, and many others.

Surprised that Ruth and Esther aren't on here, considering two books of the Bible are named after them. One would think they'd each be mentioned at least a dozen times in their own respective books.

Esther is mentioned 53 times in the Book of Esther, 54 times if you count 'Hadassah.'

Thanks pbysr--I have updated the quiz accordingly; and a note to Karras, interestingly, Ruth is mentioned 10 times in the Book of Ruth.

@jtolszewski - It is not spelled "Rebekah" in Genesis because Genesis is written in the Hebrew alphabet. It is spelled resh-bet-qof-hay but since you can't type Hebrew into Sporcle, alternative spellings should be acceptable.

Amazing that one of the two women with an entire book named after her (Ruth) didn't make the list.

Benny6 - before making a comment like that you should have checked first to verify. Esther is after Nehemiah in the modern Bible

I was surprised about Ruth too Jennifer! I would've thought Eve would have more mentions too. Maybe Salome ... Delilah ... I guess those stories are memorable but short. =) I'm no bible scholar, but the one I missed (wife of Nabal) I've never heard of. Interesting! Fun quiz.

I would think that a source that has the word "complete" in it's title would include all of them. I was surprised not to see Tamar or Rahab, as they're both mentioned in the geneology of Jesus

@Benny6 you are correct that Esther is a separate scroll from the 5 books of the Torah, but she is still included in the book of ktuvim, writings and @jsftrey i could be wrong, but i believe that the order is esther, daniel, ezra, and then nehemiah after nehemiah are chronicles 1 and 2

To answer my own theorhetical question, aside from the actual title of the book, the word "Judith" appears 31 times, which would tie her with Rebekah.

Now it's very interesting to compare the numbers here with those in my quiz for the whole Bible; http://www.sporcle.com/games/Sforzando/bible_200, and it's good to see that the differences in the numbers for the women you've given are small or non-existent. I'm happy to put them down to the different translations used, or my mistakes in counting. However - and this is quite important! - my count does reveal that the following women should be listed on here; Naomi (28 mentions); Zeruiah mother of Joab (26 mentions); Ruth (21 mentions); Michal wife of David (18 mentions); Athaliah queen of Judah (15 mentions); Hannah mother of Samuel (14 mentions); Tamar daughter of David (14 mentions). If you don't believe me, feel free to do a word-count on the NIV; I might be wrong. With some of the less-mentioned women I can believe differences in translations might sort out the problem, but I have a hard time believing Ruth, Naomi or Zeruiah wouldn't make it into the top ten no matter what translation you use. So it looks as though your quiz ought to have 18 names on it rather than 11. It's just a shame that this quiz has now been published and so can't be edited.
