| I'm going to hit the stupid comments in order.
IsThisIt's comment is incredibly stupid. He treats - with no hint of irony - posting a topical quiz (anonymously, as all these quizzes are posted) on a quiz site, and about the topic of a famous and celebrated and 'cool' author, at that - as if it's a brave bit of non-conformity. I can not think of any example of doing anything, ever, as less 'brave' than posting this quiz. When I get up and go to the bathroom, that is more brave, and more bold and non-comformist, and more indifferent to the opinions of others, than is this quiz. Your comment is offensive on about six levels; if you ever encountered actual non-comformity you'd probably be overwhelmed by it, by the looks of things.
Then there's Esme. Yes, Esme - the girl (I hope you're a girl) who is 'genuinely shocked' - again, without irony - that one of the most famous short stories ever written, the story that made Salinger's name in the literary world, is known by more people here than is a much-loved but still relatively obscure short story from the same book. SHOCKED, mind. She's shocked. She was also shocked to find that more people got "A Day in the Life" than "Fixing a Hole" on the Sgt Peppers quiz. She just walks through life being shocked. Every four years she's genuinely shocked Dennis Kucinich doesn't walk away with the nomination. Life is an endless source of surprise for this woman. |
