	I'm sure many observant sporclers will notice that the heights do not increase as time goes on. The second and third buildings on the list were both partially destroyed by storms to cost them their title. By then the first on the list had lost enough of its apex to allow the 186 year old 4th building to claim the title. The heights listed for the buildings in the right hand column include antennae (some of which were added long after construction). The general consensus is that these do not count towards the 'official' height of the building but this is not surprisingly is a confused and controversial subject. A buildings height is also thought of as unofficial prior to completion, hence the bonus will have to remain a bonus for now, despite the fact that it is already significantly taller than anything on this list. Enjoy.

	The CN Tower in Toronto is taller than than all the towers listed after 1976, standing at over 1,800 feet tall. It was passed by the Burj Dubai in 2007.

	True, however it is not included here based on the definition of a building. I always heard it referred to as te tallest free-standing structure and including it here would open up a whole can of worms as there are now many communication towers in the world that rival the heights of many of these buildings.

	Very good, and very informative quiz, thank you. It shows what a spectacle the Eiffel Tower must have been at the time at almost double the previous tallest. I didn't get the bonus so I'm intrigued now as to what it is :)

	@squirrelkins: There is no bonus anymore. At the time I wrote that the Burj Dubai (Burj Khalifa now) was not yet complete so it didn't officially count, thus until early in January I couldn't include it as an answer.

	How much extra height did the Antenna add on the Empire State Building? because i always thought the difference between the Chrysler Building and Empire State building was under 50m when it was built. Also i had no idea the Washington Monument was that big!! Thats almost as tall as everything in Auckland, New Zealand!

	Not a complaint, but just curious: what qualifies the Eiffel Tower as a "building" but not the CN Tower? Both have enclosed indoor spaces. The Eiffel has those spaces inside an open framework that looks like scaffolding, with occupied floors on only a few levels. The CN has those enclosed occupied spaces on only a few levels, with the structure between them closed rather than open. I'm not really seeing much difference here, functionally speaking. "buildings" are usually occupied on all floors, which doesn't apply to the Eiffel Tower any more to the CN tower. So is there some other definition that i am missing? Thanks!

	agreed with adam_peterson about observation tower vs building, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (that keeps track of this sort of thing) defines a building as having more than 50% of its height as usable floor space and an observation tower as having less, the Eiffel Tower & Washington Monument (& maybe pyramid) fall into the same category as the CN Tower http://www.ctbuh.org/TallBuildings/HeightStatistics/Criteria/tabid/446/language/en-US/Default.aspx

	Despite the CN tower being called a "structure" and not a "building", it serves the same purpous as the washington monument (observation tower) and should therefore be included on the list.

	If you go by structures you would have to include all the radio masts that have passed the height of the Empire State Building since 1954. In fact, until the Burj Khalifa, all the tallest structures in the world have been radio masts since then. If you go by tallest free-standing structures, then you would put the Ostankino Tower in Moscow passing the Empire State building in 1967 and then the CN Tower up until the Burj Khalifa. The Eiffel Tower and Washington Monument should only be on the list if you are counting structures. For buildings, Cologne Cathedral should be followed by Ulm Minster, the Philadelphia City Hall, Singer Building, Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower, Woolworth Building, and 40 Wall Street up until the Chrysler Building. Also, St. Mary's Church should be after St. Olaf's.
