Halfway into the time, I've got four of the twelve pairs. I really think this needs something else: a category for the pairs, or word lengths, or something. I'm looking at most of them and just shaking my head in despair.

Good suggestion (as always), for now I have added the word lengths. I'll see what else I can come up with to give people a fighting chance. I should also mention that this was inspired by a great game by TimeAndTide that I stumbled across called neighboring capital anagrams and I have since found very good variations by both rockgolf and sporcla for those that enjoy anagram quizzes.

I didn't even know where to start with this despite the length of the answers being given. Even a vague category might help.
