All flags relate to a current day country as found in the Sporcle Countries of the World quiz (http://www.sporcle.com/games/world.php). The countries may not have necessarily all been independent states when they used the flag shown, but they are all independent now. I’ve tried to accept both the name of the territory at the time of the flag and the name of the country it is now. Borders and country names have changed somewhat over time so if you spot anything that should be accepted please add it to the comments so I can improve the quiz. Thanks and enjoy.

Great quiz! And iceberg. What quiz is complete without Kyrgyzstan?

@jonesjeffum. Good quiz. I honestly wasn't intentionally stealing the format. I'd never seen yours and it didn't come up when I was checking for duplicates. We only overlap on two flags though so there should be room for both quizzes.

Today's European flags could learn something from this quiz.

Apparently that big "R" on the Rwandan flag was needed to distinguish it from Guinea's identical tricolour; it strikes me as probably the clumsiest and ugliest solution they could have possibly found. Luckily Rwanda's post-2001 flag is a lot easier on the eye.

I knew one would be Kyrgyzstan but I still haven't learnt how to spell it!
| bazmerelda: | Jul 31st, 2010 at 00:22 GMT | | 2 points |
@wahpiangeidamnit: You're right of course. I think my brain must have slipped. I have no idea where I got that one from. The offending content has been amended. @Williams27: Cheers. I hadn't heard that story. The big 'R' certainly wasn't very elegant. Surely they could have just run a 'Design our Flag' contest and got something better for free.

I'm pretty sure I've seen wallpaper that looked exactly like that French flag.

I can't believe I missed Kyrgyzstan. Nominated.

I've updated the images for numbers 13 and 16. On closer inspection the Indian flag I had was used as a naval ensign during that period. The Mexican one was often reported to be the first flag of Mexico but was only ever really the flag of the Army of the Three Guarantees. Sorry for the mistakes.

As much as I understand the desire to include Kyrgyzstan, that was never its flag as an independent country. I don't think it really makes sense to include a country whose flag changed when only it became independent and then call it a former flag of the country.

I could suggest Afghanistan as a suitable replacement, which went through about 20 different flags over the past hundred years, or Greece (former Kingdom of Greece flag) for something that was a little more consistent.

Foiled by Kyrgyzstan yet again!

I could never really recall which former Soviet flags were which (aside from Belarus's which is the basis of their current flag), but when I saw one in here, I knew it HAD to be Kyrgyzstan.

Gonna have to change this soon when the revolution in Libya topples Gaddafi, they're going to bring back this flag.
| bazmerelda: | Mar 6th, 2011 at 10:00 GMT | | 3 points |
I know! I'm really annoyed they've gone and done that. Probably not half as mad as Gaddafi though I'd wager.

I still don't know why Libya changed their flag. Every time someone buys construction paper for his/her child, he/she purchases instant copies of the Libyan flag.

Great Britain's old flag makes more sense. Why do they have the diagonal red now?
| eab21: | Oct 12th, 2012 at 00:28 GMT | | 8 points |
@redcobra7: The red diagonal cross was added when Ireland became a part of Great Britain in 1801, forming the United Kingdom.

@redcobra7 The Cross of St. Patrick was added to the flag to represent Ireland and was never removed when Ireland left the union. No doubt the flag will remain unchanged if Scotland leaves the union in 2014.
