I know I've mixes species, genera and families in the hint column. I can find individual species of each if people prefer consistency but I felt it just made the quiz look a lot cleaner with the shortest possible names. It shouldn't affect the playability either way; one mamba will give the same answer as any other, but I can change it if people want.

That last column screwed me! But fun quiz :P Hadn't heard of a 'Gila monster' so just googled him. What an ugly little fellow.

you've never heard of a gila monster. what about douc, bobolink, axolotyl, trogon, bichir, tuatara, kinkajou, hoopoe, etc.

Half of the ones I got wrong were birds, apparently I can scratch ornithologist off my list of possible career choices. Great quiz.

Any other Animal Crossing players who recognised Coelacanth and Arapaima from the game?

@maaxwell: Why do you think they were the first fish I thought of when I started to make this? ;)

@Extinctanimals22: Just for you - http://www.sporcle.com/games/bazmerelda/no-longer-mammal-bird-reptile-fish-or-amphibian
I did consider including a couple of extinct animals in this quiz but felt they'd be out of place. When you made that comment I thought it could maybe work as a standalone quiz on its own (I'd never realised there were Sporclers so interested in extinct animals that they would name themselves after them). Personally, I think the extinct version is very difficult, but maybe there are a few prehistoric experts around the site that will enjoy it anyway. In hindsight, maybe an expert should have been left to make the extinct version - I'm more of an idiot with limitless access to Google. Google knows everything.

The description is wrong. Fish is not a class, but several classes, and birds are often considered reptiles. Look it up before you argue with me.

Yes, I know about the fish. I've chosen to use the age old classification simplification as taught in schools to any non-science specialists. For the purposes of a multiple choice quiz of obscure animals, there is just no point in forcing people to differentiate between bony and cartilaginous fish (hardly anyone without a science degree is even going to care why they would be classified differently anyway).
With regards to birds and reptiles, yes birds have reptilian ancestry but they have surely evolved sufficiently to deserve distinct taxonomic classification. I've never seen any serious claims that modern birds should be lumped back together with snakes, lizards and crocodiles etc. I did make a change in the extinct version where I'd picked a species that really was in a grey area but I think all of these birds could only ever be labelled as birds. Ultimately of course, all plants and animals on the planet have evolved from the prokaryotic cells of the first life on Earth. Life has diversified in so many ways that we have many umbrellas under which it can be classified. We don't just call every species a prokaryote simply because of the shared ancestry. So some people might consider birds to be reptiles but I'd imagine they are very much in the minority.

Got them all except alligator, which is too obscure for a quiz for the general public IMO...

I like the bare-bones wrong answer replies. Nothing like typing in "bird" and have the quiz plainly state "It's a fish." (That happened a number of times. In fact, if scores like 24 or 26 are a fail, then I scored
mega
fail.)

A basilisk is also the giant killer snake in Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets, which is the only reason I got it right.
