I thought this would have been done before but I couldn't find it anywhere. Let me know if it has been done better before and I will take this down. If there was a way to make Sporcle accept over 1000 separate answers I would use it but unfortunately 300 is the maximum so it has to be multiple words per answer.
Also, would people prefer 20 minutes for this or does that just give too much time to figure out all the words in between? The gaps between each word is generally fairly small. |

| I would have liked 15 minutes to get more answers but by 20, I could have gotten them all. |
 | bazmerelda: | May 20th, 2011 at 13:22 GMT | | 2 points |
| I'll wait a little while to see how people's scores average out. Definitely looks like it could do with a couple of extra minutes at the moment. I do think 20 would make it too easy though. |

| Nice quiz. I definitely needed more time ... and it seemed that "pun" was not accepted. |
 | bazmerelda: | May 20th, 2011 at 16:21 GMT | | 4 points |
| It seems I typed 'pum' in the data by mistake. Thanks for catching it. Time upped to 15 minutes. |
 | Flick: | May 21st, 2011 at 09:02 GMT | | 2 points |
| This is pretty great as it stands, but the time factor is an obvious problem if you look at the stats. Have you considered putting four words in each box? (I'm guessing you switched to three per box after 'K' to balance things up and give exactly 300 answers). The advantage of four in a box is that it would partly address the time issue, but would also bring more of the boxes into view, reducing the need to scroll down as much. |
 | bazmerelda: | May 21st, 2011 at 09:34 GMT | | 2 points |
| Yes, I wanted to have the answers as spread out as possible so there was the maximum amount of different answers to guess - I find the main problem with these grouped quizzes is that you lose track of the answers which have come up which you haven't typed yourself. I haven't tested it on any other computers but on mine all of the answers appear on the screen as it stands. All of the answers above 200 have come since the time was increased to 15 minutes so I think it is getting pretty close, maybe an extra minute or so? I could change it to 4 words per box if you think this would work a lot better though? - it would bring the quiz down to 254 possible answers and I'd need to take the game offline for a while to sort it out. |
 | Flick: | May 21st, 2011 at 12:22 GMT | | 1 point |
| It's your call obviously. It would be nice to keep the time at fifteen minutes (or lower) though. I think at the end of the day it will come to whether you're happy with the current '% Answered' figure. |
 | bazmerelda: | May 21st, 2011 at 14:24 GMT | | 3 points |
| Well I've changed it to 4 answers per box anyway for the sake of consistency. I think the time is enough to get 100% if people are tactical about it but still short enough to make it a challenge. I'll wait and see how the scores stack up after the changes and make any changes to the time limit depending on how it looks. |
 | balatjr: | May 22nd, 2011 at 04:52 GMT | | 1 point |
| I'm curious as to how to be tactical. I was at 72% after 15 minutes, and would have loved to keep going, but I was just grinding them out. Clearly there must be a better way to do it. Still, quite enjoyed trying to do this. |

| wow bazmerelda, another great quiz! this is honestly one of my favorite quizzes ever now. i never favorite quizzes, but i just did for this one! this better be published soon! |

| Really enjoyed this. It has many facets, such as putting them in as you randomly think of them, to trying to fill in the gaps with some logic. Ace. |

| Isn't 'sud' a word? As in soap sud. |
 | bazmerelda: | May 27th, 2011 at 11:40 GMT | | 2 points |
| Not according to TWL which this list is based on. It only appears in its pluralised form in the 4 letter words list. I suppose you never get a single soap sud, they just appear as an amorphous mass. It does however appear in the SOWPODS word list which combines the British-English and American-English Scrabble dictionaries. SOWPODS is a lot more comprehensive but I just thought it would be too big to fit on the page. I have now noticed that this source does seem to have missed 3 words that other TWL lists have though - for some reason I now can't delete all data and re-import from Excel anymore so I am going to have to move all of the data manually when I have time. |
 | bazmerelda: | Jun 2nd, 2011 at 20:10 GMT | | 2 points |
| Data now updated and source changed to fully comprehensive TWL06 list. 1015 three letter words in total. |

| The answer words are a bit mangled here: (OIL OKA OKENE ONO ONS OOH)
(OLE OMS ONE ONO). The alpha order is messed up and OKENE popped in there.
I wish I'd had 15 minutes. I got 238/254 in 14 minutes. Almost there! |

Nice quiz- learned a lot of new words lol |

| At first I was confused how there were only 254 3-letter words in the English language, but then I tried the quiz and it made sense. :) |

| I thought I was doing really well, until I timed out and saw that I made only the 57th percentile. This was a challenging one, nice quiz! |

| I'm wondering what this quiz actually measures. I'm surprised to see it published. |
 | bells87: | Jun 25th, 2011 at 06:46 GMT | | 16 points |
| I agree that more time should be given.. Not cos I'd get them all.. Just would give me more time to torture myself by typing words I already have! |
 | bazmerelda: | Jun 25th, 2011 at 07:33 GMT | | 13 points |
There was a fair amount of discussion on the time limit before this was published. It had been higher and it had been lower. The trouble with giving much more is that the further you get into this game, the easier it gets to start just plugging every letter combination in between the answers you have. 3 letter words use such a high proportion of available 3 letter combinations that you will inevitably fill your gaps fairly quickly. That being said, I wouldn't mind an extra minute or so being added from looking at the histogram. Only Sporcle Admins can do that now though so you'll have to keep asking nicely if you want it. They do read the comments on recently published games. Hope this explains why I had to keep the limit fairly tight though.
For those who enjoyed this there is a 4 and 5 letter version in my profile, but no one will ever play Scrabble or Boggle against you again if you complete them :p |

| Isn't "ide" a word? Fish I think. |
 | bazmerelda: | Jun 25th, 2011 at 09:00 GMT | | 1 point |
| Ide is in the Collins word list used in British Scrabble play but not in the TWL word list used in North America which I used as the source. Presumably it isn't a common enough fish in North America to warrant a mention in any of the 5 dictionaries TWL is comprised of. I could have used the more universal SOWPODS list which combines TWL and Collins as the source but it would have just bloated the quiz with more words that are uncommon enough not to be listed in every dictionary. Maybe the US just uses the alternative spelling of id, I'm not sure. |

| 222... I'm happy with that.
Missed out obvious ones like "ice" and "ill" though...
Maybe it's because I tend to play longer words in Scrabble. |
