This is more of a number ladder - I wonder if it would be possible to make an actual word ladder in Latin?

I'm sure it must be. I'm not sure how many people would be able to play it though.

I think this can totally be a minute shorter too.

OK, 1 minute it is. I'll change it back if no one can finish anymore.

Wow....I was going at a good, steady speed, not super duper fast, but not slow either, and the time ran out when I still had like 6 answers to go. But fun quiz anyway!

Nice quiz, not sure about the time, you might have to tweak it depending on the feedback. Could you add a word ladder tag?

It used to be two minutes until sproutcm suggested the change. One of the guidelines for word ladders is one minute per ten words. This quiz does require a different type of thinking than most other word ladders, but one minute feels a tad too short.

bazmerelda: Great game. Part ladder, part math, excellent! Regarding the timer, I'll change my username to needaninetysecondtimer and hope admin notices.

I've added 10 extra rungs and 1 minute to the ladder which should hopefully put the difficulty somewhere between too easy and too hard. I've also added a word ladder tag - not sure why that didn't appear automatically when I had word ladder in the title.
I guess this needs slightly less time than a standard word ladder as there are only a maximum of 18 possibilities the next answer can possibly be, rather than 75 when all letters are being used.
@pause: Can you get us a 30 second timer for those ultra short, 5 answer blitzes too please?

@baz, you went wrong on the 3rd last rung, changed two at the same time. Think you meant 3050 - MMML.

That's exactly what I meant, thanks. 11am is clearly too early for me to be attempting to re-write quizzes.

Much better! haha perfect actually, since I only had 11 seconds left. :)

Even with the 'cheat sheet' at the top this is still an entertaining challenge.

MMMM is not 4000, any given roman number cannot be repeated more than 3 times. the correct form of 4000 would be IV with a line on top

@marceloOrigoni: I've been reading around a bit on 4000. It turns out that the Romans weren't very consistent in the way they applied their rules for large numbers. The most logical way of writing 4000 is actually Má¹¼ (1000 less than 5000). [IV]-bar is also acceptable. However MMMM was commonly used by early Romans (and is the version given by the source). Any would be acceptable versions of 4000 at various times in their history, but only one fits into the pattern of the word ladder.

I think you should remove the hint at the top. It kind of ruins the point of the ladder if you tell them how to write each number
