@rockgolf or anyone who is interested: Jules Rimet was the president of FIFA who began the World Cup in 1930. The original version of the trophy, a gold plated statue of Nike, was later named after him. Just prior to the 1966 World Cup, the trophy was stolen before being discovered at the bottom of a garden by a dog named Pickles a week later. After winning the World Cup for a third time in 1970, Brazil were given the Jules Rimet trophy to keep. Unfortunately it was stolen again in 1983 and never recovered. Apparently during World War II, the Jules Rimet was kept in a shoe box under the bed of the President of the Italian Football Federation, so that it was kept safe from the Nazis. For a simple competition prize it has had quite a history.
@phj1871: It still sends shivers down my spine when I hear it. Our team really was good enough in 1996. I'm not sure if I'll ever get over the disbelief of how we were defeated. Almost every line of the song is just as relevant to our team now as it ever has been too. |
