	"Challenged" means "Someone asked their local public or school library to ban this book". "Banned" means said library actually did so. Given that it's the ALA, the American Library Association, tracking this, it is indeed one that is USA-specific. As to why some of these were challenged/banned, just ask yourself "Is there some possibility that someone, somewhere, would be offended by this, reasonably or not?" If the answer is yes, that's why. Note that the answer will be yes for almost any book in existence. And like Admiral Maxtreme, I do find it ironic that "Fahrenheit 451" is on the list. Not surprising, though.

	@MRL: Ah, I see. Thanks for the explanation. Pretty much everywhere else, the term `banned' means that the courts (or, occasionally, the government, as with `Mein Kampf' in Germany and Austria) have forbidden the publication and sale of the book. It seems rather grand to use the term `banned' to mean `withdrawn from a public library'.

	MRL is quite correct, but I agree with davidr. Really this is the most challenged books. Statistics on banning aren't available, particularly because of the common practice of so-called "stealth banning," where books are just quietly removed from libraries.

	Luckilly I grew up in a town that did not challenge books. I read quite a few of these in junior high and high school. Unfortunately I only answered 25 out of 100 on this quiz.

	BlueWing: You have to remember that many/most of these are young adult/teen novels, hence why you (and I, and a lot of people, apparently) haven't heard of a lot of them. Obviously there are more "offensive" and "subversive" books, but they aren't the types of things that middle school and high school aged children would be reading. Tropic of Capricorn, for example.

	I'm amazed that Ulysses did not make this list. It was banned from the United States until 1933. If you follow the link at the top and click the very bottom link there, "Banned and/or Challenged Books from the Radcliffe Publishing Course Top 100 Novels of the 20th Century" you can see a much more mainstream list of famous novels that have been banned throughout the 20th century.

	I hate books being banned. I'm not a big reader, didn't do well on this quiz, but it's the thought that a person can honestly say that everyone else should have the same opinion as them or else it's wrong. Some of these are very good books, and it just doesn't make sense... Republicans...

	This list isn't just public libraries, but it includes school libraries as well. For a book to be challenged, it has to actually be IN the library. So although some books (Madonna's Sex, The Kinsey Institute Report on Sex, etc) would probably be among the most offensive to parents, they aren't likely to be found in any school libraries. Most challenges are made by parents, so generally they challenge what books their children check out from the library (be it school or public) and they (the parents) find offensive. Books are frequently challenged for religious, sexual, and racial reasons, and also for "age appropriateness". Conservatives generally accuse the ALA of being a "well-known liberal organization." Apparently, support of the first amendment (of the USA) is a "leftist" activity these days!

	tcalleen is right. Many of these books are addressed by parents who are trying, albeit misguidedly, to protect the innocence of their children. They don't want their children to be exposed to words like f* (Salinger) and n*** (Twain) or issues such as lesbianism (Newman), abuse (Angelou) or menstruation (Blume.) Furthermore, with Schwartz and Stine, it may be that they don't want their kids to have nightmares. Don't get me wrong, I'm completely against banning books, but I did find a trade of Warren Ellis' Stormwatch on the shelf at my job. I took it to the librarians and just went "yeeaahh, maybe we should look at this." I think they sent it up to the high school. Incidentally, there's about 9 of these books that are taught at my school!!

	@ElDavo: and for the record, I don't know how many of them are Republicans per se, as much as misguided, overly concerned parents. Not that I am a Republican, but many of the organizations that have flown under the communist/ socialist banner worldwide have not been the most friendly to freedom of speech.

	@PHI: That's one of my favorites as well. But I think the reason it's not on here is because it is not a book that children would be checking out, so parents would be less likely to know what is in it, or that their children have it in the first place. Also, a general description of the book doesn't sound very threatening: "A man rebels against the totalitarain government."

	I note the list says "of 2000-2007". Probably a lot of the books we'd expect to get challenged aren't on the list simply because they haven't been challenged in the past 8 years.

	I can't believe that people feel so threatened they want to ban books. I read ALL of Judy Blume's books growing up, and I think I turned out okay. They were maybe the most popular books at the SCHOOL library. So happy my library and school didn't ban them.

	When I discuss the history of book banning and challenging in my classes, I use the 1990-2000 ALA 100 most challenged book list (I like having a complete decade). Little Black Sambo is on that list. Daddy's Roommate is, I believe, second on that list, but it doesn't show up on this one. Heather Has Two Mommies is listed around 20 on that list, but it's last on this one. Where's Waldo is listed on that list, but it isn't on this list. I actually didn't do particularly well on this list because of the changes that have been made. Also, remember that this list is only the 100 MOST challenged books for the decade so far, not an inclusive list of EVERY challenged book.

	I teach HS English, and like many other people have said, I am not advocating the bannishment of the books I am about to list, just stating my suprise that they are not on here. A Clockwork Orange is one that we get a lot of complaints from parents about. In Cold Blood is one we get complaints about. I would have thought that Lord of the Flies would be on here based on some of the other answers. 1984 is always a big one as well. Some of these I can't for the life of me understand why they are on here. Freaky Friday? What?! Why that book?

	I would have thought 'Lolita' would have been banned. And also 'A clockwork orange". Both banned when they were released but due to the content i would've expected someone to have requested they be removed
