Alaska... why not just say USA?

Also, a small part of northeastern Turkey (Kars and Batum) was part of the Russian Empire from 1878 to 1918

Fun quiz. Time seems a bit on the long side. I understand your reluctance to put "United States" in there since you're referring only to one state. Perhaps a note that the North American entry is a state, province or territory would solve that dilemma.

Good quiz, take off a couple minutes at least, 2-3 off. Usually Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia are considered Asia, at least they are on the Countries of Asia Sporcle quiz and not Europe. And Alaska, at least accept US and United States.

Kaliningrad a) is currently part of Russia and b) was not part of the Russian Empire (it was in Prussia/Germany until 1945).

Weren't the Japanese parts of the Sakahlin Islands part of Russia at some point?

So... how embarrassed should I be that I had 17 out of 18 with plenty of time to spare, was wracking my brain for another European territory... and then realized I didn't enter 'Russia' yet?

Good quiz. To answer nbatchelor, the areas that were Japanese are still a part of Russia, so they're already covered. I agree that Turkey and "USA" should be accepted though.

Didn't Russia also control Port Arthur in China prior to the Russo-Japanese War?

Yes, China should definately be included - There are several small islands along the border between the two countries that have switched hands to China, including Tarabarov/Yinlong Island, Damansky/Zhenbao Island, and half of Bolshoy Ussuriysky/Heixiazi Island. The Russian Empire also had concessions in Port Arthur and part of Tianjin.

Also, Russia's adventures into what is now the United States also included California (Fort Ross) and Hawaii (Fort Elizabeth), so Alaska alone is perhaps too narrow. There were also forts along the coast of British Columbia, so Canada could also be included.
