| Doing this from memory definitely doesn't work in this case. Apart from the anachronisms (Benin was Dahomey in 1914; Ghana was the Gold Coast) the organization is utterly confused. I'm not sure which administrative system France used in 1914-18 but the larger units were French West Africa and French Equatorial Africa (as you may remember if you collected stamps). The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Uganda, Nyasaland, Zanzibar, Ifni/Spanish Sahara, the High Commission Territories (Basutoland, Bechunaland & Swaziland), Portuguese Guinea, the Comoros, the Seychelles, Fernando Poo (Spanish Guinea), Cape Verde and Mauritius are just some of your omissions. It really can't be done just from memory, even if it's unusually good (and like most people's, yours is far from perfect), which is why people are asking you for a source. (They're not doubting your honesty.) What, for example, was the current name and what status it held (e.g. as a quasi-independent protectorate, part of a larger possession, "owned" by a private company, or considered like Algeria as an integral part of the Metropolis) are all fine and tricky questions that vary by time and by interpretation. If you use a historical atlas, make sure both that it's sound and that its maps are sufficiently large and clear. |
