| Australia, Canada, South Africa and New Zealand were all Independent by 1914: Canada since 1867, Australia since 1901, New Zealand since 1907 and South Africa since 1910. Also, in WWI Newfoundland wasn't part of Canada and fought in its own right (as a dominion). India, on the other hand wasn't yet a dominion. The British Raj didn't end until 1947. The term dominion was granted to colonies which had achieved responsible self government, and is usually used to define the colonies achievement of independence. |
