| Assuming things are working right, acceptable answers should be the common family name, the scientific family name, or the species name in cases when there is only one. Source started out as wikipedia but their list includes a couple species that can fly a little and several that were extirpated more than 1000 years ago, so additional research was necessary. In a couple of cases I couldn't find estimated extinction dates, so I had to guess whether extinction was within the last 1000 years. I suppose a better way might have been to extend back to the beginning of the Holocene, but that added mostly obscure species so I didn't feel like it made the quiz any more fun. |
