| Issues: (1) At times the US F&WS list and the Red List do not agree; in such cases I've used whichever treatment was more expansive. (2) I had difficulty extracting data on subspecies from the Red List, so some may be missing if they were never federally listed (particularly if they have long been extinct); also, the F&WS does not have "critically endangered" category, so no subspecies are listed as such even though some (e.g., Attwater's Prairie Chicken) certainly qualify. (3) A couple of species (Bahama Swallow and Worthen's Sparrow) are not popularly considered part of the US list, but they are listed by one of the entities; the effect is to make it difficult for someone with only field knowledge to get 100% on the quiz. (4) For anyone who missed it, you can get the subspecies by listing the species name (or, occasionally, by misspelling it); this makes it a bit too easy to get the seaside sparrows, but makes the clapper rails and the like at least possible. (5) The bonus answers include only species that were listed and then later delisted by the F&WS, and therefore miss a couple of taxa that probably qualified for listing at one time but have since recovered. |
