Interesting quiz. You ought to say in the notes that overseas territories are included, just to be fair.

thanks for the comments. I decided against hinting at the overseas territories to make it a little trickier. :)

"Amount per sq km" is an inaccurate or misleading heading. Just "sq km" would be correct, otherwise it's like you're looking for a density of coral reef (where the tiniest islands would surely win) as opposed to how much in total.

@Endasil: duly noted. I have updated accordingly. Thanx for comment.

Nice to see a completely fresh source/concept for a country quiz. I know absolutely nothing about reefs, so I just guessed island countries.

I love the quizzes that have enough answerable material, but you also learn something from them!(Sudan? really?) Great job!

I was surprised Mexico wasn't on here. When I was there, there were tons of tours to go see Mexican coral reef.

@Julian69. Thanks for the comment. This quiz is based purely upon the "World Atlas of Coral Reefs" (publ 2001). I guess that because Belize only has < 300km of coastline is why it doesn't feature.

I have snorkled at coral reefs in the Yucutan and Cozumel. Mexico should be in there. And yes, the Red Sea has some of the most diverse coral reefs in the world. I snorkled off the Sinai peninsula this April and it was beautiful!

Also surprised that Belize didn't cut it. But then I learned that its reef is a 300-km section of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System. Any quiz that makes me learn something neat gets 5 stars from me! Good work.

Because you've snorkeled in a reef somewhere, the information here is wrong? Interesting logic.

I reckon there should be a bonus answer for Switzerland - something like "Erm, are you sure you actually know what a coral reef is?" :)

There are cold water coral reefs too (and sponge reefs in cold waters). They aren't that well studied, but I'd bet that if these were accounted for too, Canada and Russia would make this list.

The Red Sea has a coral reef in it. That explains Egypt, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, and Eritrea. Still blows my mind, though.

One of the most famous dive sites is located in the Red Sea (the Blue Hole) as well as a world famous WW2 wreck, the Thislegorm. Seen both. So I got Egypt, Eritrea, Saudi Arabia, but forgot Sudan :S

nice quiz am wondering though (i doubt if it reaches >2000sq km) but since the Dutch Antilles does no longer exist, the coral reeds of Saba, Bonaire and St Eustatias are part of the Netherlands. I will check it and report it later

excellent quiz, brings up our awareness of the need to save the reefs from the irresponsible bumblers at BP for example. Cuba's reef loss, for one, would be devastating
