@PSU840: the public beta was "Kodiak." I don't know what the other bonus is. It's not Lion, Cougar, Ocelot, or Ceiling Cat.

I'm surprised they haven't just tried to use the codename "Betterthanvista" yet. I'm sure Steve Jobs suggests it every time and someone has to talk him out of it

Eventually they'll run out of cat species... I wonder what the succession plan looks like for that one.

irichospn, they only need three more for 10.7, 10.8, and 10.9. I imagine they'll go with a different theme for OS 11.

Fun fact: there is no animal that is officially called the "panther". Although it is sometimes used colloquially to describe the cougar or leopard, it actually comes from Panthera (Pantera) which is a genus of cats that includes the Big 4 (Lion, Tiger, Leopard, Jaguar).

@gracie: There's no reason to assume that 10.9 will be followed by 11.0. Version numbers are not decimal fractions, even though they're separated by decimal points. `10.9' just means `version 10, release 9' so it can be followed by 10.10, 10.11 and 10.12.

@IrichOspN: My guess is that they will move on to fictional cats Mac OSX 10.10 "Top Cat" Mac OSX 10.11 "Meowth"

And then once they've run out of fictional cats, they can move onto fictional dogs, then fictional monkeys... they can use those Sporcle games as guidelines :)

I actually guessed "Hobbes" after Leopard, thinking perhaps they'd already gone the fictional route, seeing as I don't really pay attention to Mac OS releases. Maybe next year.
