It took a bit of figuring to work out how to make my first Foursomes/Match 4 quiz today and a few friends asked me how I did it. A spreadsheet helped a lot, so I made a sample one with the matching quiz. The tutorial is a Google doc at the link in the Source above. Enjoy!

Amy, given the popularity of these quizzes, I think this is a nice little teaser. It also helps people understand how to take the quiz, because it's difficult to cram the directions in. The few I made, the rating really dropped by people who made comments; indicating they clearly didn't read the directions. I do have one suggestion. It is best to keep the categories that show up as answers really short. This keeps the the clues from becoming unaligned. If you go to the original published quiz created by "sproutcm" you can see how he does this. I do hope your tutorial encourages more of these to be made. They are lots of fun when done well!!

Thoughtful idea, Amy. I agree with houserulz, though, in that the category names need to be brief. But they must be written in an obscure way, like a notation. What I mean by that is that you want to keep people from simply guessing categories. (I also made a foursomes quiz, pretty much on the heels of the initial sproutcm set, and people were still figuring out the rules, so I undertand what you're saying, houserulz, about ratings.)

One thing I notice, in my quiz, is how low my comments get downgraded, for no real reason that I can see, except that maybe some players were vindictive? :) Perhaps, Amy, you can help create a Foursomes Quizmakers' Support Group?

@amybang - I really, really appreciate that you have taken time to help us fellow Sporclers/quizmakers make quizzes. I've spent a lot of frustrating time trying to figure things out by trial and error. I have very little computer experience, and although I LOVE Sporcle, it's very difficult to find help when you're stuck. @penbersep - I agree. I'd like to see some kind of support group/blog for quizmakers. Trust me, I've had quizzes published, but I still have lots of questions to make even better quizzes. There needs to be an easy way to help each other out.

Oh yeah, it should be "Lions, and tigers, and bears! Oh my!" The animals need the "s" at the end to go with "Oh my!"

Thanks for the comments, guys. I'll change the lions, tigers, etc to plural when I have a few moments to update it. When I first made it, I wanted the "lion" entry to possible be confused with the "felines" category, so I didn't pluralize. I realize now that the correct thing to do is to make the other cats plural.

@pembersep - I didn't make brief answers because I wanted to show the construction the quiz in the answers. But I think I can if I make a little more explanation in the spreadsheet. I'll work on that when I make the "lions" change.

I've updated the quiz and the associated spreadsheet so that only the categories show as answers and so that the animals are plural.
