| No, we only want them to count because they DO count. The NFL pre-Super Bowl was not in some dark age. I mean why even make that the cutoff point then, why not make it only teams that won post-merger? That was a much more radical change than the institution of the Super Bowl.
There are reasonable cutoff points for each sport. I'm not as familiar with the NBA or NHL, but the NFL counts all of its championships as equal, since the beginning, and MLB counts all of its championships from 1903 to now as equal. Those two leagues, at least, are not complicated. They're explicit about what championships count. While it would serve the interests of fans of dominant modern franchises (49ers, Steelers, Cowboys, Patriots), it's simply not reflective of the history. The Detroit Lions have won championships. So have the Browns. The Bears and Packers and Redskins and Giants have won more than you say. And on and on. These teams should be rewarded for their history. I mean why not take away all the pre-war MLB championships? Or pre-modern MLB draft? Or pre-free agency? It's arbitrary the way you've done it. The Yankees would never have piled up those titles if there had been a draft, 30+ teams, etc etc. Yet they did, and those titles count. So it is in football. |
