It would seem that dogs and cats belong somewhere around 7th or 8th.

I think it would be best to simply re-title this quiz "Top Ten Smartest Animals according to Animal Planet. Clearly there's an immense amount of subjectivity here, and Animal Planet doesn't even come close to quantifying their choices. Rat is smarter than a gorilla? Squirrel is smarter than an african grey parrot or a raven? (etc)

Yeah, that's a good idea. I'll change it.

Human thing shocked me. But pigeon and rat is very believable. These are very smart creatures. You don't need to be a primate to show intelligence; their intelligence is very niche-specific..something outside of what most people would define as smart.

I was surprised to get a point for squirrel, and also at seeing the bonobo lumped together with the chimp (one would assume).

If humans aren't animals, what are we? Plants? Fungi perhaps? Maybe protozoa?

Odd that typing 'ape' gives Orangutan, but not Chimpanzee. Chimps are apes too.

This list was originally compiled on Animal Planet's "The Most Extreme" show, which always omits humans because, well (at least in this case), we all KNOW that we're smarter than any other animal. Half of the lists they compile would have humans on it, and that doesn't make for good television.

Yeah, maybe adding "other than humans" to the title would help. Or at least make it a bonus answer. This list is clearly for fun as there's no scientific ranking of animal intelligence that I know of.

@Chocolatl: I'm not sure, but octopuses (octopi?) have been observed performing complex tasks like unscrewing the lid of a jar to reach the food inside.

Spend some time with my cats and tell me that.
Dogs and cats are intelligent in ways that we recognize, but objectively and scientifically, they are not as intelligent as some of these other animals.

I remember watching a documentary called "Bird Brain of Britain" it was a documentary testing the ability of birds to learn by completing more and more complex tasks to receive food. Certainly showed some birds are smarter than we give them credit for.

Humans' closest relatives are chimpanzees (we share 99% of our DNA with them), but I'm yet to meet a chimpanzee who can say "Polly wants a cracker"! Parrots- underrated, overlooked, misunderstood.

As I recall, pigeons were trained to be placed into missiles to guide them to targets by pecking on the silhouette of an enemy ship. That's fairly intelligent, but the fact that they willingly allowed themselves to be placed into a missile with an explosive warhead makes me question just how intelligent. Octopi are incredibly intelligent doing everything from figuring out how to pick simple mechanical locks to picking the winner of the World Cup (maybe that last one's more random chance than intelligence).
