(*sigh*)...@LICA, I see you're new to Sporcle. Here's the deal: Sporcle quizzes allow quizmakers to accept multiple alternative answers, but within reason. There's still a character limit, even if it's only to keep us all sane. If a QM tried to accept every...single...possible...name for a country in a Geography quiz (including historic names, alternate names, local languages, short forms, long forms, this form, that form), for all 194* countries, he or she would go stark raving mad within femtoseconds. (*-And don't get us started on what IS one of those 194 countries and what isn't, which is for another discussion.)
Thus, over the years, the Sporcle community has adopted a number of conventions to avoid arguments like this. Take the Countries Of The World quiz to see what names we consider canonical. Generally it's English common names with some alternates (Timor-Leste and Cote D'Ivoire, e.g.) and a few common abbreviations (UK, USA, CAR...). In the case of the former Zaire/Congo, we split them into DRC and Rep Congo to ensure that a quiztaker truly knows they are now two countries, and so that if a newbie types "Congo" he won't be fooled into believing he got them both. You really do get used to them quickly enough, and it really helps avoid a lot of p***ing contests in the comment section.
Oh, and for future reference to avoid another painful learning process like this: France borders Brazil. It just does. ;) |
